Stoneware box is wheel thrown and faceted with sculpted and carved kingfisher. The bird is painted with oxides and underglaze.
Fired in a salt/soda wood kiln to 2400 degrees. Much of the surface variation and color is the effect from wood firing and is completely individual.
My faceted box series started in 2019 during a pottery workshop with John Dix in Sasayama Japan. While staying in Kyoto, I also researched netsuke, highly detailed miniature sculptures, often animals, that are carved out of bone, wood, or clay to tradionally be worn with kimonos. My sculptures on these faceted boxes are directly influenced by looking at netsuke and animals specific to Japanese art.
