Stoneware box is wheel thrown and faceted with sculpted and carved porcelainous stoneware kingfisher.
Bird is hand painted with underglaze and oxides.
The faceted box series started in 2019 during a pottery workshop with John Dix in Sasayama Japan. While staying in Kyoto, I also became facinated with netsuke in Japanese culture. Netsuke are highly detailed miniature sculptures, often animals, that are carved out of bone, wood, or clay to tradionally be worn as part of an outfit. My sculptures on these faceted boxes are directly influenced by looking at netsuke and specific animals in Japanese art.
