Stoneware box is wheel thrown and faceted with sculpted and carved Fox. Minimally glazed then fired to 2400 degrees in a salt/soda wood kiln. Much of the greens and browns are from flame, ash, salt, and soda decorating the surface during the firing process.
My faceted box series started in 2019 during a pottery workshop with John Dix in Sasayama Japan. While staying in Kyoto, I also researched netsuke, highly detailed miniature sculptures, often animals, that are carved out of bone, wood, or clay to tradionally be worn with kimonos. My sculptures on these faceted boxes are directly influenced by looking at netsuke and animals specific to Japanese art.
